Palenque Archaeological Site
- Location: Chiapas
- Culture: Maya
- Century: XXIII
Description
Considered the “jewel” of Mayan architecture. Palenque is
located at the intersection of the tropical Chiapanecan jungle highlands and the Tabasco
lowlands. This magnificent structure was strategically planned to be built atop a semi-elevated
city landscape to simultaneously control the highland’s forest resources and the lowland’s
agricultural resources.
This led to trade routes located on the borders of the Usumacinta
regions. In this way, Palenque dominated Yaxchilán, Bonampak, and Piedras Negras in
Guatemala. On the other hand, Palenque enhanced the development of a glyphic scripture. Besides
timetable purposes, this text denoted a mere artistic expression to transmit a message.
