Description
Founded in 1542 over the ruins of the ancient Maya city of T´Hó. Mérida conserves its diverse essence; colonial, classic, and modern. Its architecture, a blueprint and witness of time,
confers the city with a multifaceted aspect; large residences, colonial churches, renaissancestyle theaters, gardens, and French-inspired palaces, alongside modern buildings that don’t
disrupt the urban harmony of this beautiful capital. The expressiveness of its people is unique
to its Yucateco inhabitants.
Their charming and distinct local accent cuts off the flow of speech.
Simultaneously, it emphasizes words by “elongating” them, like a reminiscence of the original
language: a Spaniard with a Maya accent! The multiple identities that permeate the people
from Mérida are reflected in their millenary ancestry, ways of speech, fabrics, music, and
literature. “Y cuando emerge la Trova” (And, when the Trova emerges), a romantic expression
of the soul.
